When Scott Kerr launched IronCreek Energy Services from his kitchen table in 2011, he and his shareholders had little idea of the journey that lay ahead. Securing that first customer was a hard-fought victory and earning a second felt like real momentum. Yet, behind the excitement was the sobering reality of what building a company truly meant: long hours, financial risk and an unwavering commitment to earning trust one customer at a time.
“When you start, you’re excited because you’re taking on more work, but then you know with more work, you’ve got more payroll, and with more work, you’ve got another payment on another machine,” says Scott Kerr, president and CEO of IronCreek. “But we had a good group of customers that got us here, that believed in us and gave us the opportunity to prove ourselves. I’m really proud of that.”
IronCreek outgrew the kitchen table, then its first broom closet-sized office before moving into a proper office, complete with windows. Each move reflected steady growth as the company expanded its rental fleet, added staff and strengthened its service capabilities.
Many early clients remain loyal partners today, and word-of-mouth referrals backed by a reputation for reliability continues to open doors with Canada’s largest E&P companies. For new clients, especially these larger organizations with stringent requirements, selecting a contractor often comes down to a few simple questions surrounding how long the company has been operating, its safety record, who it has worked for, and the depth of its fleet and field support.
The answers paint a picture of the kind of service clients can expect, and IronCreek’s answers showcase the company’s greatest strengths. Fifteen years of experience, an industry-leading safety program, trusted relationships with big-name energy producers, a comprehensive fleet and a deep commitment to field support makes IronCreek a partner clients can count on.
“At IronCreek, we believe that lasting success is built on strong relationships and delivering a consistently high standard of service to our customers. Many of our clients have partnered with us for years because they know they can rely on our experienced, professional crews and our unwavering commitment to safety,” says Chris Bachur, general manager at IronCreek.
The company provides premium rental equipment and specialized services to the oil and gas, energy, mining and construction industries, with plans to diversify into other energy and non-energy markets. Its fleet ranges from excavator packages that manage drill cuttings on rigs to bins, tanks, matting and a general array of surface equipment geared toward drilling and completions. Over the years, the company has expanded into horizontal drilling support and on-site power generation, continually investing in equipment and services that help clients work more efficiently.
Just as important as the equipment are the people operating it. IronCreek’s experienced, safety-focused operators represent the company professionally on every site, while the team methodically and proactively maintains the equipment that’s running around the clock so they can mitigate disruptions to client operations.
If an issue does arise, IronCreek can dispatch mechanics quickly while backup machines are on standby to keep projects moving. With its headquarters in Cochrane, shop and yard facilities in Rocky Mountain House and Grande Prairie, and additional satellite locations in B.C. and Alberta, IronCreek is positioned to provide rapid support wherever clients need it.
With its focus on efficiency, innovation organically became central to the company’s growth. IronCreek was the first company in the oil patch to introduce Exclusion-Zone Lighting System, which improved visibility and worker safety around heavy equipment. More recently, it pioneered the next iteration: an AI-enabled 360-degree camera systems on excavators that uses intelligent monitoring technology to enhance hazard detection, improve worker visibility and help prevent incidents before they happen.
“We’re working on two other pieces of equipment now, too. I’ll just say one is an operational piece of equipment for the site to assist in drilling operations for optimization and efficiency. The other one is Stage 3 of our safety/innovation additions to our track hoes,” Kerr says. “We like to be the ones at the front of the bus with innovation. We’re very proud of it, and I’m confident that we’ll be the first ones to do what comes next as well.”
That commitment to innovation, combined with exceptional people and an uncompromising approach to safety, continues to distinguish IronCreek in the market. Rather than focusing on one-time transactions, the company builds long-term partnerships by consistently delivering dependable equipment, providing responsive service and offering solutions that improve client operations.
Those efforts were recognized in 2024 when IronCreek received the ConocoPhillips Supplier Recognition Award, a global honour celebrating contractors that demonstrate exceptional safety performance, operational excellence and strong alignment with the company’s values. For a Cochrane-based business with more than 90 employees that regularly punches above its weight, this recognition reinforced their belief that they can compete with the very best in the industry.
Being the best is also reflected in the community. IronCreek is constantly expanding opportunities to collaborate with Indigenous communities and create meaningful employment for their members. IronCreek’s strong commitment to safety, environmental stewardship and continuous improvement are all part of how the company defines success.
“IronCreek’s success over 15 years is rooted in a clear formula: elite people, leading-edge safety practices and a relentless focus on client outcomes,” says Gary Brenner, HSE manager at IronCreek. “This combination not only differentiates the company in a competitive market but also ensures clients return year after year, confident in IronCreek’s ability to deliver safe, efficient and reliable results.”
From a kitchen table startup to a trusted partner for some of the country’s largest energy producers, IronCreek Energy Services’ growth has been driven by steady investments in people, equipment and innovation. As the company continues to adopt new technology, strengthen client partnerships and support the communities it serves, its mission remains the same: delivering safe, reliable, quality service that keeps customers coming back.
